Fixed Braces

Traditional and reliable teeth straightening

Fixed braces are the most commonly used option, and are suitable for a wide range of orthodontic cases. They consist of brackets attached to the front surface of your teeth, with a thin metal wire held in place with elastics. Fixed braces produce excellent results as they can move teeth very precisely. The brackets are now smaller and more comfortable than ever, and can be made of metal or ceramic.

Why have orthodontic treatment?

As well as enhancing the appearance of your teeth, there are a number of other benefits to orthodontic treatment. It can improve eating and speaking ability, as well as encouraging better oral hygiene as teeth become easier to clean in their straighter position.

Braces can be used successfully to treat a range of issues, from crooked, crowded, overly spaced and twisted teeth to more serious malocclusions (upper and lower teeth not biting together properly) and misalignments.

What does fixed brace treatment involve?

During your initial consultation, we explain the treatment process and how fixed braces can be used to achieve your dream results. We also take digital impressions of your mouth so your custom brackets can be created.

If your teeth are overcrowded, it may be necessary to remove one or more teeth prior to your brace fitting. If there is not enough space between teeth, bands can be inserted to create sufficient gaps.

When your brackets are ready, we fix them in place on the front of your teeth using strong dental adhesive. The wire is then threaded through to begin your straightening journey, and shaped to encourage your teeth to move.

As the wire slowly returns to its original shape, it pulls your teeth with it. We see you for regular progress appointments during your treatment, allowing us to make sure everything is going to plan and make necessary adjustments. Once treatment is complete, we remove your fixed brace and reveal your new smile!

Common questions

Are fixed braces painful?

You may experience some discomfort during your fixed braces treatment, particularly when your braces are first fitted and every time they are adjusted or tightened. You can manage this by using over-the-counter painkillers, and you may want to eat a softer diet during this time. The good news is that the discomfort is temporary.

How long will the treatment take?

The total treatment time for fixed braces depends on each individual patient, but typically takes around 12-24 months. We can give you a more exact time at your consultation.

Why do I need to wear a retainer?

A retainer is a vital part of all orthodontic treatment. It is used to keep your teeth in their new straighter positions, and to prevent undoing the results you achieved with your braces. Retainers can be fixed or removable, and often worn overnight.
