Why do I need a dental crown?

If one of your teeth has become damaged or weakened, a dental crown provides a comprehensive restorative solution. As they replace the whole outer structure of the tooth, crowns are particularly useful for teeth suffering from extensive decay, multiple fillings, or general trauma and damage. We also often use crowns to provide a durable and natural-looking finish following root canal treatment.

Common questions

How do I look after my crown?

The best way to care for your crown is to stay on top of your oral hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth and gums with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day. You also need to see your dentist regularly for check-ups so they can keep an eye on your crown and the tooth underneath.

Can I choose the colour of my crown?

Yes, we understand the importance of a natural-looking smile so you are able to choose the colour of your crown, based on your personal preferences. We may advise you of the shade which would best match your natural tooth colour, but it is ultimately up to you. If you are considering having whitening treatment, it’s best to have this treatment first, as whitening is not effective on crowns or other restorations.

Are tooth crowns permanent?

Tooth crowns are not permanent, and will need replacing or repairing at some point. Most crowns last for up to 10-15 years before natural wear and tear will likely cause the need for removal and replacement. The treatment process is irreversible as some of your natural dental enamel is removed in order to accommodate the crown on top, so you will always need a crown on your tooth.

Is getting a crown painful?

We prioritise your comfort throughout the entire process. Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area, ensuring a pain-free experience during tooth preparation and crown placement. Our team is dedicated to creating a relaxed and comfortable environment, and many patients report that the procedure is no more uncomfortable than a standard filling.

What materials are used for dental crowns?

We offer a variety of high quality materials, including porcelain, ceramic, porcelain fused to metal and metal alloys. We will discuss the best choice of material for your individual needs. We will take into account the position of the tooth, your bite, and aesthetic considerations.

Will my crown look natural?

Yes, modern dental crowns are designed to look and feel just like your natural teeth. We use high-quality materials and precise colour-matching techniques to ensure a seamless blend with your smile.
